Short term car insurance for foreign visitors?

Short term car insurance for foreign visitors?

Me and a few guys (UK citizens) are planning on coming to the US and driving East to West over a few months. We are thinking of buying a car and then selling it before we leave.

Is it possible to get short term car insurance for this amount of time? Keeping in mind that we are not from US also?

thanks

First of all, you may need to consider the matter of licenses. Some states will not register someone a car if they do not have a US license. Also, you will be paying through the roof for insurance as US insurance carriers have no way of verifying a non-US license, so they charge you higher premiums. If you are a younger person, you may pay a lot more. Without a US address, I think very few insurance companies would write a policy. Furthermore, even if you are able to get an insurance policy, it may only cover you while you are the driver; none of your mates would be covered to drive. If you have auto insurance now, check to see if your insurance company offers any special coverage for traveling outside Europe. Check into getting an international license that covers you to drive in other countries. You may need to fill out some forms or a test (Americans have to if they wish to drive in UK). A car rental may be another option as usually they are later model cars and more dependable. You can also take out insurance with the rental car agency. Most airports have rental car companies there. You may want to inquire of them ahead of time.

I would think you could get a 6 month policy

Call Safe Auto. They are about the cheapest, and specialize in the minimum legal insurance.

6 months is the usual term of insurance, but if you sell the car and cancel the insurance, you will get a refund of the unused portion of the coverage. Some companies (Progressive Drive comes to mind) allow monthly payments. So for the month you sell the car, instead of a payment you would ask to cancel.

Try contacting an independent car insurance company in the US. They usually deal with many car insurers' and can probably guide you through the process. If you contact one of the major insurers like State Farm or Allstate they may be far more expensive than if you shopped around. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Call a local independent agent around where you will be buying the car. They may be able to help you, but, you may be put in the Assigned Risk. You will need a mailing address where the policy & any bills will be sent & it needs to be a place that will able to forward the mail to you. Most states require that you get a license in their state within 30 days of getting insurance there. You may be able to get Progressive but I also believe they want a license in the State where the car is registered & insured. They are also very strict about where the car is garaged (kept at night) so if you are travelling the country, this may not be an option for you. There is no problem cancelling the insurance when you sell the car, you just have to call the agent & sign a form, but they will need a forwarding address to send you any return premium due to you. This will all have to be done in US funds too. I hope this helps.
