Can I switch car insurance after a car accident?
I got into a car accident a month ago and was told that my premium will go up. Can I switch carriers and and get a better deal? However, once policy is cancelled my insurace, will my claims on the accident will still be covered?

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters No, you will not be able to avoid the record of the accident by switching insurers. The record of your accident will follow you. Your accident will be covered if the policy was in was in effect at the time of the accident. Cancelling it post accident will have no effect.

First off, I wouldn't worry about switching your insurance until your premium actually goes up – it might take six months or more and it might be much less than you think. Secondly, if you have an accident on your driving record, your rate will be affected no matter what insurance you have. If you were not at fault, the impact will be smaller, but any accident makes you a higher risk in the eyes of the insurance industry.Third, if you were covered at the time of the accident, then your current insurance company will deal with the accident regardless of whether you switch to a different company. However, if you switch companies, it might slow the process of your claim.

The accident will be covered as long as the policy was in force at the time. However, switching insurance companies may not make a difference because they also will proceed to find that AFA (at fault accident) and your premium will go up. Any accident goes against you whether it's with the same company that you were with or a new one. Source(s): Agent for Progressive
