Can I cancel car insurance before expiration date?

Can I cancel car insurance before expiration date?

I got car insurance and paid a fee but the expiration date says it ends in one year, I paid for 1 month and now I need to get insurance from another company. Do I cancel the insurance I have now? if I dont will they charge me every month? Or should I just forget about it and let the ppl cancel me off.

Best Answer – Chosen by Voters ~~Once you have gotten your new insurance approved and you are positive you have a policy, then call and cancel your other insurance. If you have a refund coming they will send you it. You do not want it to look like you were canceled for non-payment.~~

You don't say why you need to get another company and I don't know what fee you're referring to but you probably secured pricing for a one year policy for which you must pay a monthly premium. Generally you can cancel auto insur when you don't need it anymore (car sold, totaled) but you must notify the company to get a prorated refund for the days paid but unused or they will assume you still need coverage and continue to rightfully bill you. However, if you still have the car or are considering buying a new one you will still need coverage should you decide to drive. Most people cancel the old and start the new insurance policy on the same day. If you wait until they cancel you for nonpayment you will be liable for that bill.

Don't let them cancel you. They could catch wind of it at the DMV and it would cause a huge head ache trying to prove that you were insured through another company. Get your insurance from the new company, and cancel your old one. Just make sure that you don't have a lapse in insurance, even by a day. Source(s): experience

You didn't say why you "need" to get insurance from another company, but yes, you can cancel your current policy. But the agent will want you to show proof that you have other insurance in force. If you have, he/she will request cancellation on the effective date of your new policy. If you have any unused premium, it will be refunded to you at a "short rate", which means the company will keep a portion of the unused premium for their troubles. (About 10%). There are no flat cancellations. You will also have to sign a request to cancel, and present proof of other insurance. If you just allow the company to automatically cancel your policy for non-payment, and if your state is a mandatory insurance state, you could be asked to submit proof to your DMV that you have insurance in force. Also, if you wait for the company to cancel you, you may end up owing them more money. When this happens, people tend to not want to pay it. If it's not paid, it will be turned over to a collection agency and go against your credit. Source(s): Retired agent/mgr., 30 yrs.
